Cranial Nerve Involvement in Neuralgic Amyotrophy

چکیده
Neuralgic Amyotrophy (NA) is generally conceived as a multifocal neuropathy of the brachial plexus. However, different atypical forms with the involvement of other peripheral nerves, such as the lumbosacral plexus, the intercostal and the phrenic nerve and the cranial nerves (CNs), have been reported in the literature. In an attempt to shed more light on the atypical presentation of NA with CN involvement, we summarized the most relevant features of all cases of idiopathic NA with CN palsy, published up to January 2016. CN involvement in NA usually occurs with concomitant classic brachial plexopathy. Less frequently, CN palsy is the unique manifestation of the syndrome. In these cases, clinical suspicion and imaging studies are essential for a correct diagnosis, which may have therapeutic and prognostic relevance.

Bilateral neuralgic amyotrophy presenting with left vocal cord and phrenic nerve paralysis.
This article reports the difference between neuralgic amyotrophy and neuropathy caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatment which manifested with severe shoulder pain followed by marked weakness of bilateral upper arms and involvement of cranial nerves. A 62-year-old man presented with acute severe neuropathic pain at the left shoulder, bilateral shoulder weakness, hoarseness of voice from v...

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to characterize the ultrasonographic findings on nerves in neuralgic amyotrophy. METHODS Fourteen patients with neuralgic amyotrophy were examined using high-resolution ultrasound. RESULTS Four types of abnormalities were found: (1) focal or diffuse nerve/fascicle enlargement (57%); (2) incomplete nerve constriction (36%); (3) complete nerve constricti...

Neuralgic amyotrophy is a well recognised condition of unknown aetiology with characteristic clinical features.' These include severe pain in the shoulder region, followed within hours or weeks by motor or sensory abnormalities, or both, in the distribution of the cervical roots or nerves. Unilateral disease is more common clinically but if electromyographic (EMG) studies are performed bilatera...
متن کاملClinical, Electrophysiological Findings in Adult Patients with Non-traumatic Plexopathies
OBJECTIVE To ascertain the etiology of non-traumatic plexopathy and clarify the clinical, electrophysiological characteristics according to its etiology. METHOD We performed a retrospective analysis of 63 non-traumatic plexopathy patients that had been diagnosed by nerve conduction studies (NCS) and needle electromyography (EMG). Clinical, electrophysiological, imaging findings were obtained ...
متن کاملHistology of hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy.
We report the findings in five muscle and three sural nerve biopsies, and in one postmortem plexus specimen, from six patients with hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy (HNA). We found that the sensory nerves are definitely involved in HNA despite the mainly motor symptoms, and that lesions in nerves and muscles are more widespread throughout the peripheral nervous system than clinically presumed, b...
